YOU would have to have been living under a rock for the arrival of Ford's Territory to have escaped your notice. Former Ford boss Geoff Polites reckons it's the most important vehicle built in Australia since the Holden 48/215 and his veiw - naturally biased - would have plenty of supporters. Territory is a straight-forward concept, but one that hasn't been developed and manufactured in Australia before. It's a high-riding five-door wagon with the choice of either rear or all-wheel drive and five or seven seats, and sharing some of its mechanical detail with the Falcon range also built locally by the Blue Oval. Call it cross-over or soft-roader, but don't get confused and regard it as a true off-roader in the Toyota LandCruiser sense. Territory is designed for the 'burbs more than the bush and if you bear that in mind it delivers impressively. This time round we're testing the top-spec Ghia all-wheel drive, but watch out for a test of the two-wheel drive version soon.
