WHEN Ford bought Land Rover in 2000, it ended up with a flagging Honda CR-V rival (current Freelander), an aging medium-sized SUV in the shape of the old Discovery and a Range Rover that was soon to be put out to pasture in place of a bigger and more expensive replacement based on the formidable BMW X5. What it didnŐt get was an X5 rival, and thatŐs where sales were booming. So it set out straight away on one, basing it on the underpinnings of the 2005 Discovery but building it shorter, squatter and sharper overall. Mindful of this youŐd be forgiven for thinking that "Discovery Sport" would be the result. But, no, Land Rover has christened its resolutely non-Range Rover-based X5-rival "Range Rover Sport". Confused? DonŐt be, because this all-terrain British SUV is very straight forward.
